Suprasellar Meningioma

Diagnosis

Suprasellar brain mass. Arachnoid cyst of the posterior and middle cranial fossa. Visual deterioration.

Patient:

Child, 6 years old, Kazakhstan

Physician:

Professor Martin Scholz, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Sana Kliniken Duisburg

Response from Neurosurgeon Professor Martin Scholz

It is necessary to remove the tumor in the suprasellar region using a pterional approach. Before the operation, the levels of beta-hCG (beta-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin) and alpha-fetoprotein in the blood should be determined to exclude a germinoma.

Parent´s Question

Is it really necessary to perform the surgery now, or can it be postponed while observing the progression of the disease?

Response from the Physician

It is possible to monitor the growth dynamics of the tumor and perform a follow-up MRI in 2–3 months. However, we risk losing valuable time. In addition, the deterioration of vision is an additional factor indicating the need for surgery.
