Kidney tumor

Diagnosis

Tumor in the middle pole of the left kidney.

Patient:

Female, 38 years old, Kazakhstan

Physician:

Professor Jens-Uwe Stolzenburg, Head of the Department of Urology at Leipzig University Hospital

Patient's complaints

An ultrasound scan revealed an irregular, oval-shaped growth in the kidney. The tumour measures 4.5 x 3.1 cm and is located in the centre of the left kidney. Additional MRI and CT scans were then performed. Doctors suspect that it is an angiomyolipoma. There are currently no symptoms. The attending physician believes that surgery to remove the kidney is necessary.

Response from Professor Jens-Uwe Stolzenburg

I have examined the patient's images, which show a tumour in the central part of the left kidney. The tumour intensively accumulates contrast material. A similar lesion is visible in the cortical section of the lower pole of the left kidney, measuring up to 8.0 x 7.1 mm. The formation exerts a compressive effect on the renal pelvis and calyces, with moderate displacement of the middle group of calyces.

The recommended treatment is radical removal of the kidney, which can be easily performed using the da Vinci robot. Partial nephrectomy, which we perform frequently for kidney tumours (on more than 100 patients per year), is not possible in this case due to the tumour's central location. The estimated length of stay in the clinic is six days.

The preliminary cost of treatment: €15,600.
