DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSTICS IN INTERNAL MEDICINE

Recognized as one of the clinic’s leading areas of expertise

A specialist clinic in a green area

The Blankenstain Clinic offers services in naturopathy, pain management, orthopaedic pain therapy, rheumatology and diabetology (Bochum/Hattingen Diabetes Centre). The clinic also houses an outpatient gastroenterology department and a private specialist outpatient department for internal medicine.

Since 1999, the clinic has been part of the Catholic Clinical Centre in Bochum. Today, it is home to a highly regarded naturopathic clinic offering comprehensive inpatient treatments, as well as departments specialising in orthopaedic pain therapy, endoscopy, the treatment of rheumatic diseases, diabetes care, paediatric ear, nose and throat surgery, and pain management.

Private Specialist Outpatient Clinic for Internal Medicine

The main areas of specialisation at the clinic, which is headed by Professor Wolfgang Schmidt, are:

  • General Internal Medicine.
  • Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
  • Infectious Diseases.
  • Metabolism and Diabetology.
  • Preventive and Cardiometabolic Medicine.

Professor Schmidt served as Director of the Department of Internal Medicine at St Joseph’s Hospital for over 26 years, before handing over management of the department to his successor, Professor Alanna Ebigbo. As clinical medicine, medical practice and medical research are his main passions, Professor Schmidt continues to provide outpatient care at a private specialist internal medicine practice.

Professor Schmidt's many years of experience and interdisciplinary approach often lead to success, even in cases of complex or little-known diseases.

Differential diagnosis of conditions with an undetermined diagnosis

Symptoms are often complex or ambiguous, which makes it impossible to establish a definitive diagnosis. However, this is precisely what is required for successful treatment, or at least for symptom relief.

Thanks to many years of experience in all areas of internal medicine, differential diagnosis of internal diseases is one of the specialisms of the internal medicine clinic.

Professor Schmidt’s team successfully tackles the painstaking task of piecing together the ‘puzzle’ from subjective symptoms, existing or pending laboratory results, and targeted diagnostic methods.

Second opinion consultation

Patients often feel uncertain about whether recommended treatments, such as surgery, are truly necessary and how likely it is that their symptoms will improve significantly as a result. Sometimes, questions remain about the balance of benefits and risks. In such cases, a second opinion from an experienced internal medicine specialist can be helpful. If necessary, other experts are also consulted to provide the most accurate recommendation possible.
