The Hannover Medical School (MHH)

Hannover Medical School (MHH) is one of the most high-performing university hospitals in Germany.

Whether in scientific research, patient care, or academic teaching, Hannover Medical School has secured a leading position among Germany’s top university hospitals in recent years.

According to the 2025 ranking published by Newsweek, Hannover Medical School ranks 5th among the best hospitals in Germany. Based on evaluations by medical experts, patient survey data, and hygiene standards, the hospital received a score of 86 points.

Facts and Figures

Hannover Medical School — the core of the university hospital — places particular emphasis on research in transplantation medicine, infectious and immune diseases, as well as the development of biomedical technologies and implants. More than 1,400 scientists work at MHH, with laboratory facilities covering a total area of 30,000 square meters.

The hospital demonstrates outstanding performance in patient care: in 2023, 55,106 inpatient cases and 279,108 outpatient visits were recorded. The direct integration of top-level medical research into the clinical practice of its physicians yields significant benefits. As a maximum-care institution, MHH is among the hospitals in Germany that treat a particularly large number of severely ill patients.

Each year, more than 300 organ transplant procedures are performed at Hannover University Hospital. MHH is a European leader in lung transplantation and a global leader in cochlear implantation. In addition, up to 140 bone marrow transplants are carried out annually.

Given the critical importance of rhythmology and electrophysiology in the comprehensive treatment of patients with heart disease, the Hannover Heart Rhythm Center (HHC) was established within the Department of Cardiology and Angiology under the leadership of Professor David Duncker.

The center provides arrhythmia consultations, interventional electrophysiology, and implantation procedures for pacemakers, defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization therapy systems.

The center’s treatment spectrum covers patients of all ages — from newborns to the elderly. HHC works in close cooperation with the Department of Cardiology and Angiology, the Clinic for Pediatric Cardiology, the Department of Congenital Heart Disease Surgery, and the Center for Rare Diseases (ZSE) together with the Institute of Human Genetics.

The Heart Rhythm Center is certified by the German Cardiac Society (DGK) as a training center for rhythmology, invasive electrophysiology, and cardiac rhythm device implantation. The center also holds DGK certification for the treatment of atrial fibrillation.

German Hearing Center Hannover (DHZ)

Founded in 2003 on the basis of the ENT Clinic, the German Hearing Center Hannover (DHZ) offers patients a full spectrum of services, including:

  • Comprehensive differential hearing diagnostics
  • Consultation on the selection of hearing systems
  • Cochlear implant surgery
  • Lifelong medical, technical, and methodological support

The team, led by Professor Dr. Thomas Lenarz, includes ENT physicians, technical specialists, educators and speech therapists, hearing aid acousticians, manufacturers of hearing systems, and medical system developers who work in direct dialogue with patients.

The German Hearing Center Hannover advises patients on all types of modern hearing systems, including:

  • Conventional hearing aids
  • Middle ear implants
