Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO)

The clinic treats approximately 18,000 oncology patients annually. All patients receive care within the Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO – Centrum für Integrierte Onkologie). The center was founded in 2004 by Professor Michael Hallek, Head of the Department of Oncology and Hematology.

The CIO brings together all oncology centers and institutes within the hospital that are involved in diagnosis and the selection of optimal treatment strategies. Multidisciplinary tumor boards, attended by physicians from various specialties, review each patient’s case and develop individualized treatment plans.

Personalized Patient Care

Continuous medical research and numerous scientific breakthroughs in recent years have made it possible for every second cancer patient today to achieve recovery.

During treatment, which is increasingly performed on an outpatient basis, patients are supported by dedicated attending physicians. These specialists coordinate all necessary procedures, accompany patients to consultations with other experts, and communicate and explain all medical information throughout the treatment process.

In 2008, the Center for Integrated Oncology at the University Hospital Cologne was recognized as a top-tier oncology center and received certification from the German Cancer Society. Due to its achievements in personalized medicine and molecular diagnostics, the CIO enjoys an outstanding international reputation.
