The University Hospital Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum

Knappschaft Hospital Bochum is a university hospital with more than 100 years of history, located in the heart of the Ruhr region—one of Germany’s leading healthcare hubs. Within this center of medical excellence, the hospital is a key contributor. In recognition of its high standards, it became the first university hospital in Germany to receive KTQ certification in 2004.

The hospital was constructed in 1908 and officially opened in 1909 as a municipal hospital, together with a Red Cross maternity unit. On February 1, 1918, it was transferred to the administration of the Miners’ Association in Bochum and renamed Knappschaftskrankenhaus IV.

Between 1924 and 1930, extensive реконstructions and the addition of new buildings increased the hospital’s capacity from 160 to 366 beds. Following a major fire on March 31, 1931, which destroyed the upper floor of the main building, significant modernization and improvements were implemented during reconstruction. As a result, the hospital’s capacity expanded further to 405 beds.
