Through close collaboration with one of Europe’s leading medical universities, hospital physicians actively participate in cutting-edge research projects, international congresses, and academic initiatives.

Since 2016, Mannheim University Hospital has been recognized as one of Germany’s most reputable medical institutions. Department of Urology and Urological Surgery

The department’s core principle is the integration of clinical expertise, advanced technologies, and the implementation of innovative scientific developments into daily practice.

The department is certified by the German Cancer Society and focuses on three primary areas:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Bladder cancer

In 2023, the department treated approximately 4,400 inpatients. Each year, around 2,000 patients with urological tumors are discussed in interdisciplinary tumor boards, where individualized treatment strategies for urogenital cancers are developed.

The department specializes in complex robot-assisted laparoscopic procedures (over 5,000 performed since 2008), as well as open surgeries (including more than 1,300 cystectomies since 2008). It also performs a wide range of minimally invasive endoscopic procedures, for example, in the treatment of urolithiasis and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The use of advanced technologies, including two da Vinci X and XI robotic surgical systems, highlights the hospital’s high technical standard.

Expert care is also provided in pediatric and adolescent urology, as well as transgender medicine.

Center for Pediatric Urology

The Center for Pediatric, Adolescent, and Reconstructive Urology provides care for patients with congenital conditions, including:

  • Hypospadias
  • Epispadias
  • Bladder exstrophy
  • Meningomyelocele
  • Neurogenic bladder
  • Urethral strictures

Under the leadership of Professor Raimund Stein, the team performs highly complex reconstructive surgeries of the urinary tract in children.

The center operates in close collaboration with Professor Maurice Stephan Michel, Director of the Department of Urology, and Professor Dr. Lukas Wessel, Director of the Pediatric Surgery Clinic. The concept and structure of Mannheim’s interdisciplinary pediatric urology center are considered unique and without equivalent in Europe.

Since January 2019, the center has been certified by the European Board of Paediatric Urology (EBPU). Since January 2022, it has also been a member of the European Reference Network (ERN eUROGEN) for rare urological diseases and complex congenital conditions.
