Diagnosis
Left-sided cerebral meningioma.
Patient:
Female, 49 years old, Kazakhstan
Physician:
Prof. Dr. med. Martin Scholz, Chief Physician, Department of Neurosurgery, Duisburg Clinic
Expert Opinion by Neurosurgeon Prof. Martin Scholz:
The provided brain MRI scans demonstrate a left-sided central meningioma. The tumor is anatomically well-suited for surgical resection; however, it is situated in close proximity to the primary motor cortex. In this delicate area, utmost precision is required to preserve neurological function. We can safely resect the lesion microsurgically using intraoperative MRI-guided neuronavigation, ensuring maximum surgical safety and functional preservation.
Patient’s Inquiries:
- I currently have no symptoms. How urgently do I need surgery?
- My MRI report mentions a cerebral cyst. Will it be removed during the procedure?
Doctor's Answers:
- Regarding Surgical Urgency: The tumor is positioned in immediate proximity to the central lobe of the brain. The longer surgery is postponed, the more complex complete resection becomes. Furthermore, as it grows, the lesion carries a risk of triggering secondary epileptic seizures. Therefore, I strongly advise against delaying the surgical intervention.
- Regarding the Cyst: The cyst is clinically asymptomatic and holds no pathological significance; it does not require surgical intervention or removal.
Estimated Cost of Treatment: €25,000
Treatment Performed & Clinical Outcome
A successful microsurgical tumor resection was performed utilizing advanced intraoperative MRI computer navigation. The procedure went without complications, and the patient was safely transferred from the intensive care unit to the general neurosurgical ward on the following day.
Postoperative follow-up MRI scans confirmed complete (gross-total) tumor resection with no residual tissue. Early mobilization was initiated under the guidance of physical therapy specialists. The postoperative period was smooth and uneventful, and the patient was discharged in stable condition on day 9 after surgery.
Actual Cost of Treatment: €24,200
