Department of Neurosurgery, Duisburg

Under the leadership of Chief Physician Professor Martin Scholz, the neurosurgery team performs more than 2,600 surgical procedures annually, including:

  • Surgical removal of brain and spinal tumors of all levels of complexity
  • Surgical treatment of degenerative spinal disorders
  • Management of cranial defects and traumatic brain injuries
  • Treatment of hydrocephalus
  • Treatment of cerebrovascular diseases

In most cases, procedures are performed using microsurgical and endoscopic techniques. Professor Scholz and his team have extensive experience in microsurgery and are internationally recognized for their expertise in this field. With over 30 years of professional experience, Professor Scholz has performed thousands of highly complex procedures. His primary specialization includes microsurgical removal of brain and spinal tumors, as well as the treatment of diseases of the central nervous system, spinal canal, and spine.

Technical Equipment

To minimize damage to healthy brain tissue, the operating rooms are equipped with intraoperative monitoring and neuronavigation systems. These technologies continuously monitor neural structures and pathways during surgery, allowing surgeons to detect even minimal changes in brain structures. This approach significantly helps preserve neurological function, especially during complex procedures in deep brain regions.

Additionally, the clinic is equipped with:

  • 3 state-of-the-art surgical microscopes
  • Advanced endoscopic systems
  • Stereotactic surgery equipment
  • Digital subtraction angiography (DSA)
  • Intraoperative fluorescence-guided navigation system
  • Radiotherapy unit

Center for Neuropediatrics and Neuroradiology

The Department of Neurosurgery in Duisburg includes a Center for Neuropediatrics and Neuroradiology, enabling treatment of both adult and pediatric patients with complex brain and central nervous system disorders.

The Head of the Neuroradiology Center, Professor Friedhelm Brassel, is a recognized expert in the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases and is well known internationally. His areas of expertise include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of cerebral and spinal vascular malformations
  • Treatment of cerebral aneurysms in children, including infants
  • Angioplasty and vascular stenting
  • Microcatheter embolization, chemoembolization, and balloon dilation
  • Recanalization of cerebral vessels
  • Vascular stenting
  • Preoperative therapy for tumors of the head, neck, and spinal canal

Professor Brassel also specializes in the treatment of rare conditions such as vein of Galen malformations.

The Department of Neurology, headed by Professor Wilhelm Nascimento, provides early-stage rehabilitation for postoperative patients and individuals with neurological disorders.
